I believe the true potential in any dental practice lies within its people.
The systems and processes that are necessary to a thriving practice are only as robust as the individuals responsible for them. I have a few tools I use when working with dental teams including Everything DiSC®, an assessment and personal development learning experience that deepens self-awareness, inspires appreciation of others, and fosters effective collaboration amongst the dental team. This ignites cultural transformation by empowering all people to engage, connect, and thrive in the workplace.
The Assessment: Powered by 40+ years of research, each Everything DiSC personality assessment combines adaptive testing and sophisticated algorithms to deliver precise insights to each participant. These insights lay the groundwork for a personalized experience rich with “A-ha!” moments that inspire behavior change.
The Profile: The personalized content in the profile deepens self-understanding through the DiSC model. People gain insight into their own preferences and tendencies, learn more about relating to others, and receive actionable strategies to help them improve their interactions and ultimately, their performance.
The Follow-Up Tools: A suite of follow-up resources makes lasting behavior change possible by keeping Everything DiSC alive in the workplace. Participants can go deeper into their DiSC style, get real-world tips for connecting with colleagues, and gain insight into their team’s or department’s DiSC culture.
To start, let’s jump right in with a basic outline of the four styles:
🟢The D (Dominance) style is active and questioning. This describes people who are direct, forceful, and outspoken with their opinions.
🔴The i (Influence) style is active and accepting. This describes people who are outgoing, enthusiastic, and lively.
🔵The S (Steadiness) style is thoughtful and accepting. This describes people who are gentle, accommodating, and patient with others’ mistakes.
🟡The C (Conscientiousness) style is thoughtful and questioning. This describes people who are analytical, reserved, and precise.
You’re probably recognizing some of these traits in your coworkers and yourself – that’s the fun part! But it’s important to remember that this is an assessment, not a personality test. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to be- and we are all a complex blend of the four styles, depending on the situation.
Once you complete the assessment and receive your profile, you’ll gain insight into your own preferences and tendencies, learn more about relating to others, and receive actionable strategies to help improve your interactions and ultimately, your performance.
Everything DiSC and Your Team
Everything DiSC is a learning experience that can benefit every person in the organization—regardless of title or position, department or function—in building more productive and effective relationships at work. It teaches participants to understand themselves and others, while learning to appreciate the different priorities, preferences, and values each individual brings to the workplace.
For instance, some styles may value personal connection (those with a tendency towards i and S), while others prefer you get to the point (those who score high in C and D).
You already know that different people deal with conflict and tension in different ways. Recognizing the DiSC styles in your employee’s reactions to stressful situations provides a framework for how to respond most effectively.
Giving your employees a chance to understand and act on unique behavioral styles can unlock engagement and inspire effective collaboration in your practice.
Everything DiSC and the Patient Experience
As interesting as it might be, you won’t be giving each patient an assessment at the door, so how can DiSC help your staff improve the patient experience?
Let’s think about that all-important moment before a procedure starts.
Some patients ask a lot of questions about what’s about to happen, and sharing technical details about the procedure is what puts them at ease.
Others feel better knowing they are being cared for, and benefit from frequent check-ins and questions about their comfort.
These behaviors map to the DiSC behavior styles – D and C styles often respond well to more information, while S and i tend to relax with a calm bedside manner.
We talk a lot about emotional intelligence around here. That’s why giving your team members the opportunity to learn best practices for interacting with different styles is simply another tool in the EQ toolbox!
Could you benefit from a more harmonious work environment where employees thrive and patients become raving fans?
